TOUGH CONVERSATIONS FIELD GUIDE

Tough conversations are important to have, they help you navigate, grow and find your voice.

They can help you speak up, to ask questions, and to better understand those around you. If you’re not very good at having tough conversations, this is a good place to start. Download this field guide and with six principles to prepare for your next tough conversation 

 
 

GETTING STARTED

Curious on how to get the conversation going? Here are some great questions to start with!

 

Cannabis Questions:

  • What are some assumptions you’ve heard about people who use cannabis? Where do you think these assumptions come from? 

  • In your opinion, what do most adults not realize about the reasons why young people use cannabis? Where do you think the gap in understanding comes from? 

  • Does race play a role in how society (for example, individuals, groups, governments) reacts to cannabis users? 

Lived experience questions:

  • What’s your earliest and strongest memory about cannabis?

  • Tell a funny or embarrassing story that involves cannabis use.

  • Think about someone in your life who cares about you. For example, an adult or a peer. Do you feel you are able to talk to this person openly about cannabis use? How have they affected your opinion/perspective/practice of cannabis use? 

Learning about cannabis questions:

  • Tell us about a previous belief you held about cannabis that you no longer hold. How did you come to change your mind?

  • If there was a weed expert who had all the answers about cannabis, what three questions would you ask? What makes those questions important to you?

  • How have your opinions about cannabis changed since you started high school/ over the past 5 years?

  • A question about where we develop views on cannabis from. 

 

Future-oriented thinking questions:

  • How will your opinions about cannabis change in the next 10 years? 20 years?

  • What’s the hardest part about talking to your parents and/or adult loved ones about cannabis?

  • In addition to the Tough Conversations Guide, what would make it easier for you to talk to folks about cannabis?
